 Les Grottes du Foulon

Extraordinary natural caves

The Grottes du Foulon (the caves of the fuller) allow to admire the geological splendour concealed under the city. These huge natural caves were carved by water tens of millions of years ago when France was recovered by the ocean.

Following a more-than-one-hectare-long trail under the city, visitors can discover the wide diversity of the underground world in these limestone cavities : hundreds of marine quartz and chalcedony geodes, large rooms, galleries, pillars, giant kettles. This exceptional geological site invite you to travel through time, the caves are like an open book on the history on Earth with the K-T layer dating from the time of the extinction of the dinosaurs or with the giant marine mammal bones discovered in 2010.

The caves have been used by humans for 300 000 years as a dwelling, as a refuge in time of need, as a career, to grow mushrooms and now as a touristic attraction. You will also see an exhibition of items from the Palaeolithic period found on site and in
the region, a collection of stone cutters' tools and a visual show to conclude the visit.

Possibility for children to join in a treasure hunt (at an additional cost).
